Art

Welcome to the Art department

Subject Leader: Selina Shah s.shah@holyfamily.waltham.sch.uk

The Art Department consists of the Head of Art, an additional full time and one part time member of staff.  The subject is taught in KS3 and  KS4. We teach Art and Photography at KS5.

Department Aims:

We believe strongly that Art and Design education should be accessible to all, and that at whatever level or ability, students should be able to achieve.

At HFTC our students learn the importance of Art and Design and its relevance in their lives today. To quote from the National Curriculum:

- Art develops spiritual values and contributes a wider understanding to the experience of life, which helps to build a balanced personality.

- Art and Design is the freedom of the individual, the freedom of expression and the freedom to fail without retort.

- Art and Design promotes independent learning. Students learn experientially through an activity which they practise with their own eyes, hands and personality.

Art and Design teaches transferable skills: creative thought and action, skills in planning, time management and problem solving to name but a few.

Extra-curricular opportunities

We consider extracurricular activities very important and are currently fitting as many opportunities as possible outside of lesson time in the department. The range of work completed in extra curricular is visible around the department with life drawing guided by a visiting Artist and RE murals in various parts of Wiseman site.

Our extra curricular opportunities:

GCSE students are encouraged to come in to finish work at varied times with help from their teachers.

A Level Life drawing Walthamstow College three hours per week on one evening; ( GCSE students can attend).

Gifted and Talented Students can attend study clubs and have a program of study to develop their talent in the subject.

Lower school normally has the option of coming in at lunch times to continue or complete work

Gallery visits are important for GCSE and A level and are encouraged by the department.
