Overview of the department and subject

The department consists of the curriculum leader and second in charge together with four other teachers. The liturgical
and spiritual aspect of our work is normally supported by a chaplain.

The department offers Religious Education through the school as follows.

  1. Key stage 3 the department follows the programme of study using the Way, Truth and Life course.
  2. Key stage 4 the department offers the Edexcel GCSE in Religious Studies.
  3. The department currently offers AS and A2 level courses in Religious Studies examined by OCR

Extra-curricular opportunities

The department is involved with developing the spiritual nature of our school community. One key to this is in our celebration of ‘the source and summit’ of worshipping God–the Mass.

We help to provide regular lunchtime masses for staff and pupils, form group masses for years seven and eight, an annual whole school mass as well as for feast days and special events such as for those leaving and to mark the end of year.

In all lessons we try to focus on prayer as a real part of what we are learning. Groups meet regularly with the chaplain.

In KS3 we have organised visits such as to the British Museum to study the origins of the Bible.

At KS4 we have visits to a Church to study the design and layout.

The department also supports whole school initiatives such as charity work and special activities.

The department has good relations with the local parish – Our Lady and St. George – and takes part in the annual parish mission activities.
