Course Outline

AS: Unit 1 – Families and Households, Unit 2 – Education with research methods. A2: Unit 3 – Beliefs and Society, Unit 4 – Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods. There are provisional plans to change Unit 1 to Culture and Identity for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Assessment

The course is assessed by 100% by examination. There is no coursework or controlled assessment. Unit 1 = 40% of the AS grade, Unit 2 = 60% of the AS grade. Together Unit 1 and 2 make up 50% of the overall A-level grade. Unit 3 is worth 40% of the A2 grade, Unit 4 is worth 60% of the A2 grade. Unit 1 is one hour exam, Unit 2 is two hours, Unit 3 is one hour thirty minutes and Unit 4 is a two hour exam.

Homework

Homework is set regularly and students should be expected to produce essays at least once a fortnight.

Equipment required

No specialist equipment needed. Students will be provided with textbooks set to the exam specification for the AS and A2 courses.

Useful publications/websites

Students should try to keep up to date with current affairs. There are numerous A-level revision websites and many good sociological clips posted on YouTube. The school subscribes to the Sociology Review A-level magazines, which are available to the students in U41 and in the school library.
