Year 8 Girls Handball Tournament
There were 4 teams entered into the Waltham Forest Handball Tournament in which the Year 8 girls finished as runners up to a classy Lammas team.
The format was a league competition with the top 2 teams playing a final fixture to determine the winner.
First teams to play were the eventual finalists Holy Family and Lammas. It was a one sided contest with a landslide 8-0 victory for the champions in waiting Lammas. Understandably the girls were down beat and disheartened coming off. A few words of encouragement and tactical switches from the manager saw a change in fortune in their second match against Normanhurst where Holy Family ran away with victory 5-1.
With Normanhurst beating Walthamstow School for Girls in their opening fixture Holy Family only had to avoid defeat against WSFG to book their place in the final. Everything looked to be on track as Holy Family took an early lead but only to be pegged back. Again Holy Family took the lead but again it was short lived as WSFG equalised with 3 minutes remaining. The game was stretched and neither team were defending well. WSFG keeper made several good saves to deny our girls victory, these save were crucial as WSFG made their opportunities count at the opposite end score twice late on to win 4-2.
Lammas were group winners and in the final whilst it was a 3 way tie for second place which was decided on goals scored between the 3 teams. Holy Family scrapped through to again meet Lammas.
Lammas were heavy favourites for the win and did not disappoint by taking an early 1-0 lead but the year 8 girls show great resolve and equalised soon after. A much more even game was had between the two teams and the quality of Handball was much improved from earlier games. Lammas eventually won 7-3 and our girls were runners up.
It was a really good effort and the girls showed great resolve and spirit to make the final after such a disastrous opening game. Well done girls.
Year 9 Boys Basketball
In the cramped confines of the Walthamstow Gym Holy Family played host to out of borough opposition in the form of Davenant. With training facilities out of action due to winter exams a poor performance was expected but not delivered!
The starting 5 of Anthony E, Chucks, Gideon J-M and Fergus moved and executed plays with effortless ease scoring regularly off their cut; and pick and rolls. Chucks in particular looking like he was in the zone. At the end of the first quarter Holy Family led comfortably 16-9.
The second and third quarter saw the substitutes get a lot of court time and with good effect. Mobolaji and Robert putting points on the opposition to extend the lead. 31-19 at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter saw the re-introduction of the staring five and here the game was put out of sight. A game where the boys dominance was never threatened the final result 45-20. It was a strong performance from point guard Anthony E who made 7n assists in the first quarter alone but it was Chucks' 20 points which earned him the games MVP award.
