Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism

Holy Family Catholic School is fully committed to safeguarding students from the risks of radicalisation and extremist influence. We adhere to the Prevent Duty—part of the government’s national counter-terrorism strategy—and recognise that risks may emerge both online and in the wider world.

We are alert to the signs that a student may be vulnerable to extremist ideologies, whether political, religious, or otherwise. These ideologies may promote hate, division, or violence, and can often be spread through social media, forums, or peer groups.

Our Responsibilities

  • Curriculum and Culture: Through PSHE, Citizenship, RE, and across the wider curriculum, we promote British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect, and tolerance.

  • Staff Training: All staff receive regular Prevent training to recognise and respond to signs of radicalisation.

  • Supportive Environment: We provide a safe, inclusive space where students are encouraged to think critically and express themselves respectfully, helping to build resilience to extremist narratives.

Prevent Referral Process

Holy Family follows Waltham Forest’s local safeguarding procedures in relation to Prevent. If a staff member has a concern that a student may be at risk:

  1. Initial Concern
The concern is reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or a Deputy DSL.

  2. Information Gathering
The DSL assesses the concern and may gather further information from staff, family, or external agencies, with appropriate discretion.

  3. Referral to Channel
If needed, the DSL refers the case to the Waltham Forest Prevent Team via the Channel Panel—a multi-agency approach supporting those vulnerable to radicalisation.

  4. Ongoing Support
The school continues to support the student, working closely with external professionals and families to ensure safety and wellbeing remain central.
